Danish Ferry Makes Evasive Maneuver to Avoid Unknown Ship

A ferry from Molslinjen had to perform a quick maneuver on Friday morning to avoid an unknown ship that did not respond to communication attempts via radio. The incident took place shortly after the ferry’s departure from Sjællands Odde on its way to Aarhus. Jesper Maack, the communication chief at Molslinjen, confirmed the episode to both Ekstra Bladet and B.T. However, he could not confirm passengers’ speculation that the unknown ship was a Russian warship. “I do not know, but I assume that our experienced captain is right when he says it. It is their job to know which ships they encounter on their route,” Maack stated. According to the Danish Defense Command, a Russian frigate was sailing north through the Great Belt around the same time. The Navy routinely monitors the movements of Russian warships in Danish waters, but they had no reports of evasive maneuvers from commercial ferries. Maack further explained that the ferry made the decision to turn and create a safe distance from the other ship as it did not comply with normal maritime rules and did not respond to communication attempts. He emphasized that the maneuver was carried out without drama and without endangering passengers or the ship. This incident highlights the importance of adhering to international maritime rules and safety procedures at sea.
