Danish proposal suggests integrating housing and healthcare for better well-being

In a new proposal, Danish Social Housing (BL) and the Danish Local Government Association (KL) suggest integrating housing policy with health policy to strengthen primary healthcare in Denmark. This proposal comes in light of a large number of residents in social housing rating their health as poor or fair. According to the latest figures from the National Health Profile from 2021, 26 percent of residents in social housing feel they have poor or fair health, compared to 14.8 percent in the rest of the population.

BL and KL therefore believe that there is an urgent need to incorporate health-promoting measures into housing policy. The proposal, titled “Housing policy should strengthen primary healthcare”, includes ideas such as renovating social housing with health in mind. This could involve the establishment of community centers and health centers, offering close healthcare services and opportunities for physical activity. Experiences from Aalborg East, where a community center and a health center have been established with funding from the National Building Fund, show positive results. The area now has 12 clinics, and the health profile of the residents has improved significantly.

BL and KL urge the Danish politicians to enter into a new housing agreement that allows the use of funds from the National Building Fund for these purposes. They also suggest that local caretakers play a larger role in healthcare efforts, as many already have daily contact with residents and can serve as an important resource in primary healthcare work. The initiative has the potential to transform residential areas into health-promoting environments, where there is access to medical clinics and temporary beds, and where home care can have an effective pitstop.

This proposal represents an innovative approach to integrating health and housing policies, with the goal of improving the quality of life for the many Danes living in social housing.
