Denmark has lost one of its prominent political figures, former Minister of Defense Knud Enggaard, who passed away on April 11 after a long period of illness. He was 94 years old. Knud Enggaard, who represented the Venstre party (Liberal Party), had a long and influential career in Danish politics, holding no less than five different ministerial positions under two different Prime Ministers. His political career began in 1964 when he was elected to the Folketing (Danish Parliament) and lasted until he retired in 1998. During Anker Jørgensen’s government in 1978, he was appointed Minister of Interior, and later served under Poul Schlüter, where he was, among other things, Minister of Energy and again Minister of Interior, before becoming Minister of Finance and finally Minister of Defense and Minister for Nordic Cooperation. As Minister of Defense, he was responsible for several international military conflicts, including the first Gulf War and the Balkan War, in which Danish troops were involved in Operation Bøllebank (Operation Hooligan Bashing). Knud Enggaard was known for his ability to handle complex issues and his creative approach to politics. “The task of a minister is to understand the problems and handle the tasks. Therefore, it is satisfying also to deal with difficult tasks requiring a bit of creativity,” he once said about his work. He leaves a lasting impact on Danish politics and will be remembered for his contribution to the country’s governance and international affairs. The family has placed an obituary in several newspapers to inform about his passing. Knud Enggaard’s life and work will continue to be studied by those interested in Danish political history.
