After a violent fire early Tuesday morning that left half of the historic Børsen building in Copenhagen burned out, the Capital Region’s Preparedness (Hovedstadens Beredskab) has been working intensively to extinguish smaller fires and stabilize the building’s structure. Firefighters have focused especially on the basement floor, where several minor fires were put out during the night. The fire, which originally broke out on Tuesday morning, was brought under control the same afternoon, but left large parts of the building, including the famous stock exchange hall, in ruins. Only the outer walls remain in the burned-out part of the building. To prevent further damage to the building’s structure, an extensive stabilization process has been initiated. Between 40 and 50 containers filled with concrete blocks have been placed around the building to support and stabilize the freestanding outer walls.
The Capital Region’s Preparedness announced early Thursday morning via the social media platform X, that around 20 firefighters had been working on site overnight and that they expect to be present at Børsen for at least another day. Their work to stabilize the outer walls will continue for most of the day.
This tragic event has shaken many, as Børsen is not only a central part of Copenhagen’s history, but also an important cultural institution. The Preparedness and the teams involved are working tirelessly to ensure that the building is preserved as much as possible despite the extensive damage.
