Venstre’s (The Left) political spokesperson, Torsten Schack Pedersen, has been in the eye of the storm in recent days after a controversial comment on the social media platform X directed at the conservative Rasmus Jarlov. The comment, which was perceived as referring to Jarlov’s sick leave, has attracted significant attention and criticism from various parts of the political spectrum. The incident took place on Thursday evening in an online discussion about Venstre’s elderly policy, where Schack Pedersen responded to a post from Jarlov. “He is not on sick leave either,” wrote Schack Pedersen, which was quickly interpreted as a dig at Jarlov, who had previously been on sick leave. Criticism did not delay, and several politicians publicly denounced Schack Pedersen’s comment. Among them is Mette Abildgaard, political spokesperson for the Conservative Party, who described the comment as “an unbelievably low level from a political spokesperson from a government party.” Also, the political spokesperson for Liberal Alliance (Liberal Alliance), Sólbjørg Jakobsen, urged Schack Pedersen to “restrain himself.” Despite the widespread criticism, Schack Pedersen has chosen not to apologize for his comment. In an interview with TV MIDTVEST, he dismissed the notion that he had crossed a line. “I was honestly provoked by Jarlov involving my father in a post where I was excited about the government’s new elderly policy. And then I stated, in accordance with the truth, that my father is not on sick leave. If that provokes Jarlov, he should not involve my father,” explained Schack Pedersen. He added that he does not see any issue with what he wrote and noted that the platform X is often a place where people can quickly become offended. The case has raised questions about the tone and behavior on social media, especially among politicians, where swift comments can escalate into larger conflicts. It remains to be seen how this episode will affect Schack Pedersen’s and Venstre’s image moving forward.
