The Capital’s Emergency Response (Hovedstadens Beredskab) was called back to Børsen in Copenhagen late Monday night, as small embers unexpectedly flared up and required immediate action. This happened after an earlier decision to withdraw all forces from the fire site. Operations Manager Kristian Levy explained that glowing embers had been observed in a wooden beam, which is part of the structure that still stands. “We have had several small embers flare up,” he said, necessitating that the emergency response had a permanent presence on site from 01:00 on Tuesday. Earlier in the evening, the emergency response had announced that they would withdraw and only send a fire guard every fourth hour to ensure that the situation at Børsen remained under control. However, the situation quickly changed when the embers proved to be more stubborn than expected. Four firefighters were sent to the site and worked through the night to spray water on the affected areas to prevent any risk of the fire flaring up again.
“From 01:00 we decided to stay and be present with a permanent crew,” stated Levy. This crew was still active on site at 06:30 on Tuesday morning. Levy emphasized that there were no flames involved in this latest effort, but the unpredictability of the situation has necessitated a reassessment of the emergency response’s presence and strategy moving forward. The Capital’s Emergency Response has announced that they will provide an update later on Tuesday morning via social media to inform the public about the ongoing developments and their plans. This episode at Børsen underscores the challenges that emergency services often face in balancing between action and preservation, especially in historical buildings where both safety and conservation are crucial.
