Danish PM Mette Frederiksen speaks out against online harassment

In a series of posts on Instagram, Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has shared some of the hateful messages she has received. The messages contain gross insults and threats, and Frederiksen expresses concern about the tone on social media. “The harsh tone on social media is nothing new. Harassment, sexism, insults, hatred, and threats. Unfortunately, it is part of everyday life for many of you – and us. It worries me. Deeply,” writes Mette Frederiksen in one of the posts. She refers to other public figures, including participants in ‘X Factor’ and journalists, who have also experienced similar threats and harassment. The Prime Minister emphasizes that even though a public person should have a high tolerance, there are limits to what one should accept. “Shut up, I hope you get hurt so we don’t have to look at your old, ugly face,” one of the messages Frederiksen has received reads. Another message says, “Denmark will be a better place when you kick the bucket. Disgusting pig.” Frederiksen encourages others to share the hateful messages they receive to raise awareness about the problem and promote a more respectful debate culture.

“A democracy thrives on conversation. On us being able to discuss with each other. Present our arguments. Listen. Even to those we disagree with. And hopefully become wiser,” she adds. She also expresses concern that the harsh tone discourages people from participating in the democratic conversation, which can be harmful to democracy. The Prime Minister hopes that everyone will make an effort to improve the tone in public debate.
