Danish Medicines Council recommends new treatment for HER2-low breast cancer

The Medicines Council has just released a new recommendation that could bring hope to patients affected by the incurable breast cancer type HER2-low. The drug Enhertu, now recommended, has been assessed to extend patients’ lifespans and delay the progression of the disease. This decision comes after a period of negotiations about the price of the medication. The manufacturer has now lowered the price, making it possible for the Medicines Council to recommend Enhertu, which was previously considered too expensive compared to the expected effect. This price adjustment has been crucial as there has been uncertainty about the medication’s effectiveness. The Danish Cancer Society (Kræftens Bekæmpelse) has previously expressed hope that the drug would be recommended, as studies indicate that it can extend the lives of patients with HER2-low breast cancer by up to six months. Enhertu is already recommended for treating HER2-positive breast cancer, and both Sweden and Norway have also recommended the medication for HER2-low breast cancer. With this new recommendation from the Medicines Council, new treatment options are opening up for patients in Denmark, which could contribute to improved quality of life and longer survival for those affected.
