Denmark has decided to increase its military support to Ukraine by an additional 4.4 billion Danish kroner in 2024, bringing the total support to 64.8 billion Danish kroner for the period 2023-2028. This comes after a new political agreement, which includes a broad majority in the Danish Parliament, including the SF (Socialist People’s Party), Danish Democrats, Liberal Alliance, The Conservatives, The Radicals, and Danish People’s Party. Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen (V) stated in a press release that Denmark has been and continues to be one of the leading nations in supporting Ukraine. “It is crucial that we show our support to Ukraine in this critical time,” he said.
The increased funding comes without the requirement for matching funding, meaning that it will contribute to the national budget deficit. The parties have also agreed to explore the possibilities for direct purchases from the Ukrainian defense industry under necessary control mechanisms, although the details surrounding this have not been disclosed yet.
Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Denmark has provided significant military support through the Ukraine Fund, including artillery, weapons, and drones. Additionally, there are plans to send F-16 aircraft to Ukraine during the summer. This support follows a recent large aid package from the USA, totaling 426 billion Danish kroner, which has significantly strengthened Ukraine’s position on the battlefield.
Denmark has committed to supporting Ukraine militarily and economically for the next ten years, as cemented with a security pledge in February.
