After almost six years of intensive construction work, Copenhagen is soon ready to inaugurate five new metro stations on the M4 line, which will connect the city center with Sydhavn and Valby. The official opening, taking place on June 22, will have royal participation from King Frederik, who will be responsible for the formal inauguration of the new routes. The Metro Company, which has been in charge of the development and construction of the new stations, has announced that the opening will be celebrated with a ceremony at Mozart’s Square in Sydhavn. The event will resemble the festivity held at the opening of the City Circle Line in 2019, albeit on a smaller scale.
“It is always a historic day when new metro stations open,” says Erik Skotting, director of the Metro Company. “We are very pleased that the Royal Family will be represented at this important event, and we look forward to welcoming both the king and the people of Copenhagen to the new facilities.” The new stations, including Havneholmen, Enghave Brygge, Sluseholmen, Mozarts Plads, and Copenhagen South, will expand the M4 line route, which currently runs from Orientkaj in Nordhavn to Copenhagen Central Station.
The extension is designed to improve accessibility and mobility in the capital area and is expected to ease traffic in the densely populated neighborhoods. Before the new stations can be put into operation, the Metro Company awaits the final official approvals from relevant authorities. There will also be a period of intensive testing and documentation to ensure that everything works as intended. As part of this process, both the M3 and M4 lines will be closed for approximately a day around a month before the official opening.
Copenhageners and visitors can look forward to a more cohesive and efficient public transportation system that connects the city even better.
