In a heartbreaking post on her Facebook profile, the social democratic member of parliament Fie Hækkerup shared the tragic news that she and her husband Mikkel have lost their newborn daughter, Carla, just one day after her birth on April 4. Carla suffered from a brain disease that led to her heart stopping after only a day. Fie Hækkerup, currently on leave from the Parliament, described the deep sorrow that the couple is experiencing: “Carla was born with a disease in the brain and after a short day here with us, her little heart gave up,” she wrote, adding that Carla was buried in a beautiful but painful ceremony the day before. “Mikkel and I are naturally completely devastated by grief and longing for our little girl,” she continued, asking for privacy for the family in the upcoming time. This tragic event is the second major loss for Hækkerup in a short period. Last summer, she and her husband experienced the loss of an unborn child early in the pregnancy, resulting in a medical abortion. About that experience, she previously told TV 2 Kosmopol: “I lay on the bathroom floor and experienced the most insane pain. I screamed – I cried – drool was pouring out of my mouth. I was in and out of consciousness. It was so insane to be in.” Fie Hækkerup, who is 29 years old and the daughter of former Minister of Justice Nick Hækkerup, has been an active voice in Danish politics, and her personal tragedies have sparked great compassion among colleagues and citizens across the country.
