In a striking revelation, it has emerged that the political spokesperson for the Red-Green Alliance (Enhedslisten), Pelle Dragsted, was part of the agitated crowd in 1998 that chanted slogans against the then leader of the Danish People’s Party, Pia Kjærsgaard, after she was attacked in Nørrebro. This incident took place when Kjærsgaard was on her way to a radio interview and had to seek refuge in a bank to avoid the aggressive crowd. Video footage from that day shows a young Pelle Dragsted along with several other demonstrators outside the bank where Kjærsgaard was hiding. Dragsted, who is now a prominent politician for the Red-Green Alliance, has expressed regret over his involvement in the incident.
Pia Kjærsgaard has revealed that she felt her life was in danger when she was hiding in the bank and she is still affected by the incident 25 years later. She was shocked when she recently became aware of Dragsted’s presence through a Facebook post circulating with pictures from that day. In an attempt to make amends for the past, Dragsted has sent an apology to Kjærsgaard via text message, but she believes that this gesture only came about because the media started to dig into the story. Dragsted himself emphasizes that he did not participate in the physical assault, but acknowledges that his presence and participation in the chanting were inappropriate.
This incident sheds light on a previously unknown part of a current politician’s past and raises questions about the responsibility of political figures and redemption from past actions. Dragsted hopes that there are no more undisclosed aspects of his past in the autonomous environment that may come to light.
