Study from Aalborg University: High D-vitamin levels reduce cancer risk

A new study from Aalborg University has shown a remarkable connection between vitamin D in the blood and a reduced risk of developing cancer. The research, conducted in collaboration with international experts, suggests that a high level of vitamin D can play a crucial role in the fight against cancer by strengthening the body’s immune system through the gut’s microflora. Professor Tine Jess, head of the basic research center Predict at Aalborg University, explains that previous assumptions about the positive effects of vitamin D on cancer risk are now supported by new scientific evidence. “The groundbreaking aspect of our research is that we have been able to demonstrate that vitamin D not only directly affects the immune system, but also indirectly through changes in the gut’s bacterial composition,” she says.

The study includes both laboratory experiments with mice and an extensive analysis of health data from more than 1.5 million Danes. Results from the mouse experiments showed that mice with high levels of vitamin D in their blood had a lower incidence of tumors and responded better to cancer immunotherapy. These results are further supported by data from Danish health registries, known for their extensive and detailed information. “Denmark is unique because we have access to large amounts of health data that can be used to improve and support research of great societal importance,” adds Tine Jess.

The researchers’ work is an important step in understanding how vitamin D can be used more effectively in the prevention and treatment of cancer. It opens up new possibilities for integrating nutritional strategies in the fight against this serious disease.
