In a sharp criticism of the social media platform Facebook, Denmark’s Minister for Digitalisation, Marie Bjerre, has expressed her frustration at how the platform handles scam advertisements and misuse of the names and images of well-known Danes. During an episode of the podcast HØRT from Tekniq Employers, she pointed out a serious inconsistency in Facebook’s policies. According to the minister, images containing nudity, such as bare breasts, are almost immediately removed from the platform. This stands in stark contrast to the handling of scam advertisements and fake profiles, which she says do not receive the same quick and effective response. “It can’t be true that they can’t do anything about it,” she said in the podcast, adding, “They are extremely good at managing things like that, but apparently they can’t figure out scams and fake profiles. That is not okay.” One of the most striking examples of abuse is a fake article that falsely portrays TV host Divya Das as seriously injured after an alleged attack by her husband. The fake story was designed to resemble an article from B.T., using edited images of Das. Her real husband, Kim Bildsøe, has publicly condemned the allegations as “unacceptable” and emphasized that it is all a scam designed to lure money and personal information from unsuspecting victims. This case has led several major Danish media outlets, including TV 2, DR, and B.T., to send an open letter to Meta, Facebook’s parent company, urging them to take responsibility and stop the spread of fake news and scams on the platform. The letter, published on jp.dk, is titled: “Dear Meta, stop misleading the Danes and take responsibility.” The case raises serious questions about the role and responsibility of social media in combating misinformation and digital fraud, highlighting the need for stricter regulation and control of content on these platforms.
