In a joint statement on the social media platform X, the opposition parties Liberal Alliance and Danmarksdemokraterne have urged Minister of Defence Troels Lund Poulsen (V) to reconsider his stance on conscription for women and to call for further negotiations on the defense agreement. Party leaders Alex Vanopslagh (LA) and Inger Støjberg (DD) express a willingness to find a compromise and strengthen the Danish defense, despite their opposition to the government’s proposal for gender-equal conscription. “We have proposed several things that could constitute a compromise, and we are still awaiting and, of course, hoping that the minister will reconsider and call for further negotiations,” they said in their joint statement. The two parties most recently met with the Minister of Defence on Wednesday, but there has been no further dialogue since then. Previously, Minister of Defence Troels Lund Poulsen has threatened to terminate the current defense agreement if Liberal Alliance and Danmarksdemokraterne continue their opposition to the proposal to introduce conscription for both men and women. The minister has described it as a “crucial priority” for the government to implement this change. The party leaders conclude their statement by emphasizing their readiness to reach an agreement that can strengthen Denmark’s defense while also taking into account the disagreements between the parties.
