In a striking announcement, the defense spokesperson for The Socialist People’s Party (SF), Anne Valentina Berthelsen, has clearly stated that Denmark will not invest in an Israeli air defense system as part of the upcoming defense agreement. This decision comes ahead of the important negotiations scheduled to take place in the Ministry of Defense on Tuesday evening. Berthelsen emphasized that SF stands firm on their position of not using Danish tax money on military equipment from Israel. “No, we cannot accept that. And Denmark will not purchase an air defense system from Israel,” she said in an interview with B.T.
The question of whether Denmark should choose the Israeli system or the American Patriot system has been a central theme in the negotiations. Despite the American system being more expensive, it appears that SF’s position has had a decisive influence on the decision-making process. “I have spoken with the other parties, and they are informed of our stance,” explained Berthelsen, who seems confident that the agreement will rule out the purchase of weapon systems from Israel.
Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen has not yet commented on SF’s announcement, and it is expected that there will be more clarity on the situation after Tuesday’s negotiations. These negotiations, scheduled to start at 8:00 p.m., will be crucial for the direction of Denmark’s future defense policy.
