After nearly three decades at the helm of various ministries, Michael Dithmer has decided to step down as Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Business on August 1, 2024. Dithmer, who is 70 years old, has had a remarkable career and is the longest-serving Permanent Secretary in Denmark’s history. Michael Dithmer began his career in the civil service in 1984 after graduating from the University of Copenhagen. He first became Permanent Secretary in 1995 and has since served under 11 different ministers from five different political parties. Throughout his career, Dithmer has played a crucial role in many important decisions, including the bailouts for the banks during the financial crisis. He has worked with prominent political figures such as Marianne Jelved, Bendt Bendtsen, Henrik Sass Larsen, and Troels Lund Poulsen.
Minister of Business Morten Bødskov praises Dithmer for his stability and dedication: “For more than a generation, Michael Dithmer has been a solid anchor for successive governments and ministers. His ability to navigate complex political landscapes has been invaluable.” Reflecting on his time in office, Dithmer expresses a mix of pride and gratitude, stating, “I have greatly appreciated the collaboration with the many ministers I have served, and I am proud to have led so many dedicated and talented employees over the years,” in a press release from the ministry.
Michael Dithmer’s departure marks the end of an era in Danish politics, and the process of finding his successor is already underway. His legacy as one of the most influential and respected figures in Danish politics is secure.
