Danish Parties Propose Boosting Arne Pension by Extra Billion

In an attempt to make the Arne pension more attractive, the political parties SF (Socialist People’s Party) and Enhedslisten (Red-Green Alliance) have put forth a proposal to allocate an extra billion Danish kroner to the scheme. This comes in light of the fact that far fewer than expected have chosen to take advantage of the early retirement option. The Arne pension, introduced by the Social Democratic government in 2020 with support from SF, Enhedslisten, and the Danish People’s Party, aimed to give worn-out workers a chance to step back from the labor market before the regular retirement age.

To qualify for this scheme, one must have been in the workforce for at least 42 years. When the scheme was passed, it was expected that around 29,000 individuals would utilize it in 2023. However, according to the latest figures from DR (Danish Broadcasting Corporation), only around 12,000 full-time individuals have taken advantage of the opportunity. This has left unspent funds, which the parties now wish to reinvest to enhance the scheme.

“We must face the fact that there is a need to make the Arne pension better and more accessible. Many of the individuals who could benefit from the scheme are those with the most demanding jobs, and they deserve a better senior life,” stated Pia Olsen Dyhr, leader of SF.

Enhedslisten agrees on the need for adjustments and proposes that the leftover funds be used to increase benefits and make it easier to qualify for the pension. “It is about ensuring a dignified old age for the people who have worked hard their whole lives,” said Pelle Dragsted, political spokesperson for Enhedslisten.

The parties supporting the Arne pension have committed to revisiting the agreement by 2030, but both SF and Enhedslisten are pushing for this to happen sooner so that necessary improvements can come into effect for the workers that the scheme is aimed at.
