Danish PM clarifies comments on Danish work ethic and hours

Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has clarified her previous comments on the work ethic and working hours of Danes in a recent statement, which she feels have been misunderstood and taken out of context. During her speech on May 1st in Haderslev, she distanced herself from the perception that she does not appreciate the efforts of Danes in the labor market. “It’s been taken a little out of context and translated as if I’m not happy with the Danish work ethic,” said Frederiksen, emphasizing that she is pleased to have the opportunity to correct the misunderstanding. This misunderstanding originated from a previous comment about assembly lines in Russia “running 24/7”, which was used to illustrate the difference in work mentality between Russia and Europe, where there is often a discussion about the desire for shorter working hours. Frederiksen pointed out that it was meant as a metaphor for the new security policy situation and not as a direct criticism of Danish work ethic or a desire for longer working days. “I have never said that Danes should stay at the assembly line after 4 pm,” she explained, adding that her comments should be seen in the light of the current geopolitical situation and not as a general criticism of the Danish work effort. The Prime Minister also confirmed that she believes Danes work enough: “Yes, I think Danes generally work enough. It’s really good, both for families’ finances and for financing the welfare state.” With these clarifications, Mette Frederiksen hopes to have corrected any misunderstandings and emphasized her appreciation for the Danish work effort.
