Danish PM clarifies comments on work ethic on International Workers’ Day

On May 1st, International Workers’ Day, Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen addressed a previous statement about the work ethic of Danes, which she felt had been misunderstood. During her speech in Haderslev, she clarified that her previous comments about the need for a changed attitude towards working hours were not meant as a criticism of the efforts of Danes in the labor market. “It has been taken a bit out of context and translated to mean that I am not happy with the Danish work ethic,” explained Mette Frederiksen, adding, “That’s why I’m glad to set the record straight.” The Prime Minister has previously expressed concern about a tendency to discuss reduced working hours in Europe, especially in light of the increased threat from Russia following their invasion of Ukraine. “The assembly lines are running in Russia 24/7,” she had noted in March, indicating a difference in work mentality between Russia and Europe. However, she emphasized that her comments should not be seen as a desire to increase working hours in Denmark overall. “Danes work a lot. This is very good, both for families’ finances and for financing the welfare state,” said Mette Frederiksen. When directly asked whether she thinks Danes work enough, the Prime Minister responded affirmatively. “Yes, I think Danes generally work enough,” she concluded. This clarification from the Prime Minister comes at a time when the debate on working hours and work ethic has become more relevant, both nationally and internationally.
