In Køge, residents can now breathe a sigh of relief and move around without worries, after a severe fire on a local ship has been extinguished. The fire, which broke out on Tuesday, sent harmful smoke over the city and forced authorities to implement temporary restrictions for the safety of the citizens. Midt- and Vestsjællands Police confirmed early Wednesday morning that the fire was under control, and it was now safe for citizens to be outdoors again. “We have now extinguished the fire, and the smoke no longer poses a threat to the residents of Køge,” stated Jesper Mortensen, the officer on duty at the police station.
Tuesday’s fire caused significant disruptions in the city. Parents experienced difficulties in picking up their children from local institutions, as access roads were blocked. The police had to set up barriers and urged people to stay indoors, close doors and windows to minimize exposure to harmful smoke. Additionally, train services to and from Køge Station and Køge Nord Station were temporarily suspended, creating further traffic challenges. Fortunately, train services have now resumed, and normal traffic is slowly being restored in the area.
The cause of the fire has not yet been determined, and the investigation continues to clarify the specific circumstances surrounding the incident. Police and firefighters will continue to be present in the area until all aspects of the fire are thoroughly examined. Citizens in Køge are relieved that the situation has been effectively managed, and that everyday life can be resumed without fear of health consequences.
