King Frederik and Queen Mary have officially kicked off their first sailing season as Denmark’s royal couple. Their first trip on the royal ship “Dannebrog” began at Nordre Toldbod in Copenhagen and will take them to Helsingør Harbor. From there, they will continue to Fredensborg Palace, which will serve as their summer residence. This marks the start of a series of traditional summer cruises in Danish waters, a tradition that dates back to the time of Christian X and Queen Alexandrine.
Throughout the summer, the royal couple will not only visit various parts of Denmark but will also sail to Sweden, Norway, Greenland, and the Faroe Islands. It is planned that the royal couple will also visit Bornholm, Ærø, Assens, and Vejle during a late summer cruise in August. These trips allow them to meet citizens from different regions, strengthening the bonds between the royal family and the Danish people.
The royal ship “Dannebrog,” which serves as both a private and official residence for the royal family, plays a central role in these traditions. The ship, built in 1931 and named after Queen Alexandrine, is staffed by a dedicated crew consisting of nine officers, seven sergeants, two constables, and 38 conscripts from the Navy.
As King Frederik steps into his new role, his monogram will gradually replace Queen Margrethe’s at official and ceremonial sites. According to the royal house, this transition will take place over an extended period. This year marks the beginning of a new era for the Danish monarchy, with King Frederik and Queen Mary at the helm, and their summer cruises will undoubtedly be a highlight for many Danes.
