Danish Expert Shares Tips to Combat Summer Pests in Denmark

With the arrival of summer and rising temperatures in Denmark, it is becoming more and more important to be aware of pests such as house flies and fruit flies that thrive in hot trash cans. Claus Schultz, chairman of the Pest Control Industry (Skadedyrsbranchen) and technical manager at Rentokil, shared his expertise in an interview on ‘Go’ morning Denmark’. “Sun and heat act as a catalyst for the insects’ development, and it’s something we cannot control,” explained Schultz. He added that the extensive waste sorting, which has become more widespread in Denmark, also contributes to an increase in the number of pests.

To help Danes combat these unwelcome guests, Schultz has formulated five practical tips that can minimize the occurrence of pests in and around trash cans: 1. Regularly wash the trash can and make sure to keep the lid closed to avoid liquid from food waste collecting at the bottom. 2. Always rinse used food cans before throwing them away. 3. Avoid leaving food out on the kitchen counter. 4. Place small bowls of vinegar in the kitchen if you have already noticed fruit flies. This can help you identify where the flies are coming from. 5. Make sure to properly close your trash bags, and be careful not to have sharp objects like bones that can perforate the bags.

These tips are particularly relevant now, as temperatures in Denmark have reached around 20 degrees. It is a good idea to take note of these tips, as the warm days can lead to a quicker development of pests. By following these simple steps, one can effectively reduce the risk of pests spreading in the home.
