In a surprising turn of events, Githa Nelander, former leadership candidate for Nye Borgerlige (The New Right), has announced that she has left the party. Nelander, who is also a council member in Næstved Municipality and a member of the Regional Council in Region Zealand, made her decision public in a post on Facebook. In her post, Nelander explains that she does not see herself going in the direction the party is heading. “It is not the Nye Borgerlige that I joined,” she told DR (Danish Broadcasting Corporation), indicating a deep dissatisfaction with the current direction of the party. Earlier this year, Nelander had put herself forward as a candidate for the leadership position in Nye Borgerlige, at a time when the party was without a clear leader. However, she withdrew her candidacy before the vote took place, and Martin Henriksen was subsequently elected as the party’s leader.
Nelander’s announcement comes as a surprise, especially considering her previous active involvement in the party. She emphasizes that she currently has no plans to join another party but instead will “take a breath and see what the future holds.” This development raises questions about the internal stability and future direction of Nye Borgerlige, a party that has experienced several turbulent shifts in its brief history. Nelander’s exit adds another layer to the ongoing debate about the party’s identity and leadership.
