The Danish music scene has lost one of its most prominent figures, as singer and composer Peter Abrahamsen passed away on Saturday at the age of 82. His family confirmed his death to the news agency Ritzau. Peter Abrahamsen, who debuted at the age of 16 with the song “Won’t you wear my ring”, had a long and influential career in Danish music. Last year, he released the album “For enden af vejen (At the end of the road)”, which he described as a musical conclusion to a life filled with musical adventures. “I have been incredibly privileged and have had the opportunity to try out all the things I wanted, both in front of, on, and behind the stage,” he said in connection with the album release.
Over the years, Abrahamsen worked with a number of well-known Danish artists, including Shit og Chanel, Sebastian, and Povl Dissing, as well as Benny Andersen. He was also the man behind the music agency and record label Abracadabra, where he helped launch several Danish musicians’ careers. One of the most anecdotal events in his career was when he had to pawn his Volvo to finance the recording of “Svantes viser (Svante’s songs)” with Benny Andersen and Povl Dissing, an album that would later become a classic in Danish music.
The family has announced that the funeral will take place privately, but a memorial concert will be arranged to celebrate Peter Abrahamsen’s life and work at a later date. Peter Abrahamsen’s passing marks the end of a significant chapter in Danish music history, but his legacy will live on through the many songs and melodies he leaves behind.
