Following a high school party at Horsens Gymnasium and HF, several students complained of eye pain and skin irritations, leading to an investigation of the disco lights used at the event. The party company Firedisko, responsible for the lighting, is now examining whether their equipment could be the cause of the students’ symptoms. The party, which took place on Friday night, ended unfortunate for some of the participants who experienced eye pain and symptoms of sunburn on their faces and chests afterwards. By Saturday morning, ten students had contacted the school’s principal, Flemming Steen Jensen, with complaints of severe pain, swelling, and redness.
Simon Ringholm, the owner of Firedisko, expressed his concern and confusion over the situation. “It is light that we have used many times before, and we have never had problems of this nature before,” he told TV 2 Østjylland. Ringholm added that he hopes their equipment is not the cause but confirmed that the company will conduct a thorough investigation of the two UV lamps used during the party. Improper use of UV light can cause both eye damage and skin irritations. It is precisely these symptoms that the students have reported, leading to suspicion of a possible issue with the lamps.
Principal Flemming Steen Jensen has been in direct contact with the affected students and emphasizes the seriousness of the situation. “It’s deeply unfortunate, and we take it very seriously. We are investigating the matter further with the party company, with whom we have had many positive experiences in the past,” he said. The investigation of the lighting equipment is still ongoing, and both the school and the party company are awaiting the results to take necessary steps to avoid similar incidents in the future.
