Over the past three years, the number of doping-related customs cases in Denmark has almost doubled. The Customs Agency (Toldstyrelsen) in 2023 recorded nearly 1400 cases where doping was found in mail and packages. This represents a significant increase compared to previous years.
According to a press release from the Ministry of Taxation (Skatteministeriet), last year saw the seizure of 150,000 pills and ampoules, as well as 23 kilograms of raw materials that can be used for doping production. These findings indicate a significant amount of doping being attempted to be smuggled into the country, primarily for private consumption.
Tax Minister Jeppe Bruus emphasizes the importance of the Customs Agency’s efforts and states that the government takes the issue of doping seriously. “Doping is destructive and fundamentally cheating. That is why it is necessary for us, across authorities and associations, to unite and crack down on doping abuse and smuggling of doping into the country,” he says.
This increase in doping seizures and cases clearly demonstrates the need for continued focus on monitoring and preventing doping abuse, both to protect public health and to uphold the integrity of sports.
