In a remarkable announcement from the top of the Liberal Party (Venstre), there has been a rift in the government cooperation regarding the reassessment of disability pensions for immigrants in vulnerable housing areas. The Liberal Party, represented by chairman Troels Lund Poulsen and vice chairman Stephanie Lose, suggests a review of disability pensions for non-Western immigrants with the aim of increasing the workforce. However, this proposal faces strong opposition from the government partner, the Moderates (Moderaterne). Karin Liltorp, employment spokesman for the Moderates, criticizes the Liberal Party’s approach and emphasizes that it is unfortunate to stigmatize disability pensioners based on geographical and ethnic background. She points out that it is already a complex process to be awarded a disability pension, and that extensive reassessments should not be made without clear evidence of abuse. Troels Lund Poulsen argues in an interview with Jyllands-Posten that a reassessment may be necessary, as he believes there is an overrepresentation of non-Western immigrants on disability pensions in certain housing areas. He suggests “sorting the pile” to assess how many are actually unable to work. Karin Liltorp is concerned about the proposal and believes it could further stigmatize an already vulnerable group. She calls for more concrete data to support the need for such a review before the Moderates will consider supporting the initiative. The debate on disability pensions and the integration of immigrants is not new, but the Liberal Party’s latest proposal has revived the discussion with new intensity. It is expected that the topic will be further debated in the coming days, both in the Parliament and among the public.
