Royal Run, the popular Danish running event, is facing changes in the route and starting area in Copenhagen after an unforeseen event. The event, which attracts thousands of runners every year, including members of the royal family, was originally supposed to start in Slotsholmsgade for the first time this year. However, a fire in the historic Børsen building has forced the organizers to reconsider.
The Danish Sports Confederation (DIF) and DGI, who are behind Royal Run, have decided in consultation with the authorities to move the starting area back to Nyhavn, where the race has previously started. “We were really looking forward to introducing Slotsholmsgade as a new starting point, but the safety of our participants always comes first,” says Dorte Vibjerg, director of Sparta and co-organizer of the event.
In addition to the change in the starting area, there will also be adjustments in the finish area and the rest of the route. The finish area, which has previously been located at Amalienborg Square, will this year be directed towards Kastellet, which is a return to routes from previous years. These changes are a result of the necessary restructuring after the fire at Børsen, which has affected access roads and safety measures in the area.
“It is important for us to maintain a high standard of safety, and we are grateful for the understanding and support we have received from the runners and partners,” Vibjerg adds. Royal Run will take place on May 20 and is expected to once again gather a large crowd of running enthusiasts who will enjoy a day focused on community and health. The organizers look forward to welcoming everyone to a safe and festive event in the familiar surroundings of Nyhavn and its surroundings.
