Copenhagen Pride leader steps down amid controversy and sponsor loss

Lars Henriksen, the political spokesperson for Copenhagen Pride, has announced his resignation from the position. This move comes after a period of significant turmoil and loss of sponsors from the organization. Henriksen, who has been a central figure in the Pride movement for almost 15 years, stated in a press release that his departure is necessary to ensure the organization’s continued success and integrity.

Copenhagen Pride has recently faced a number of challenges, including controversy surrounding communication about the conflict in Gaza, which resulted in several major sponsors, including Maersk and Novo Nordisk, withdrawing their support. According to Pride, there was a communication error, but the damage had already been done.

Benjamin Hansen, the current spokesperson for Copenhagen Pride, acknowledges that the organization faces a task of rebuilding trust and emphasizes that the focus going forward will be on promoting the visibility of the LGBT+ cause and supporting LGBT+ artists and voices that would otherwise not be heard.

Although Henriksen is stepping down as spokesperson, he will remain affiliated with Copenhagen Pride, where he plans to use his experience and contacts to support the organization’s work. His decision to resign has been met with both understanding and regret in the LGBT+ community, where many have appreciated his long-standing commitment and contributions to the movement.

Copenhagen Pride is now preparing to navigate a period of change, with the hope of strengthening the organization’s position and continuing to advocate for LGBT+ rights and visibility in society.
