Danish Students Mostly Get First Choice for High School Placement

This year, almost all applicants for upper secondary education have been granted their first choice when it comes to choosing a gymnasium (high school in Denmark). According to a new report from the Ministry of Children and Education, 95 percent of applicants have been placed at their top priority, which is a slight increase from last year’s 94 percent. The distribution of applicants for the different types of gymnasiums shows a small variation in how many get their first choice fulfilled. In the general gymnasiums (stx), 93 percent of applicants start at their first-choice school, while for the technical gymnasiums (htx), all applicants have had their wishes granted.

The process of allocating applicants is based on the young people’s own prioritized wishes. If a gymnasium has more places than there are applicants, all applicants will be accommodated. In cases where there are more applicants than places, the applicants will be distributed based on travel time from their place of residence to the gymnasium. This is the second year in a row where applicants for upper secondary education have been centrally allocated by the Ministry of Children and Education in collaboration with the regions, a practice that seems to continue to ensure high satisfaction among the young people.
