The defense spokesperson for the Danish Social Liberals, Christian Friis Bach, is calling for Denmark to consider sending military training personnel to Ukraine to support the Ukrainian soldiers in their fight against the Russian invasion. This proposal comes in the wake of similar discussions taking place in several other European countries, including France, the UK, and Lithuania. “Ukraine is requesting this type of support, and it is crucial that we in Denmark also start discussing this possibility,” says Christian Friis Bach. He highlights three main reasons why Danish instructors should directly engage in Ukraine: proximity to the war zone, practical benefits of not having to move Ukrainian soldiers out of the country, and the opportunity to use local equipment. However, there are also potential risks in sending Danish military personnel to Ukraine. The question of safety for the Danish soldiers is particularly critical. “We must carefully consider the security aspects before making a decision,” emphasizes Friis Bach. He adds that any training base will be provided with extra protection, including air defense, to minimize risks.
During a recent visit to Ukraine with Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen and Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen, Friis Bach visited one of the potential training facilities that could be relevant for Danish military personnel. When asked whether Danish involvement could escalate the conflict with Russia, Friis Bach responds that it could also serve as a deterrent. “It is important to send a clear signal to Russia that we stand with Ukraine,” he says. Negotiations on Denmark’s possible engagement will continue in the parliamentary groups behind the Ukraine Fund, where the final decision-making basis will be established.
