In a new attempt to create sustainable changes in Danish agriculture, the party Alternativet has presented an ambitious plan to halve the country’s meat production within the next four years. This initiative is part of a larger vision to only produce the meat that Danish citizens consume. During their recent national congress in Odense, Alternativet’s political leader, Franciska Rosenkilde, presented the proposal as a realistic step towards a more sustainable future. “It is a dream that can become a reality, but it starts with a comprehensive restructuring of our agriculture,” stated Rosenkilde. The proposal also includes releasing one million hectares of land by 2030, equivalent to the size of Zealand and Funen, for purposes other than agriculture. This is intended to make room for new, greener initiatives and strengthen biodiversity.
In addition to reducing meat production, Alternativet’s proposal also includes an investment of 50 billion Danish kroner in the rebuilding of rural areas and an enhancement of local citizens’ influence on the development of their local communities. The party, which is striving to stay above the electoral threshold, hopes that this new proposal will attract attention and support from voters, especially considering the environmental and social benefits promised by the proposal. Alternativet has previously felt overlooked by the government in their green initiatives, but with this new, concrete sub-goal, they hope to create momentum and support for their vision of a more sustainable future for Denmark.
