In Aalborg, there will be an increased activity of hunters in the coming month, who will participate in a larger effort to regulate the population of rooks in the area. This initiative is a collaboration between Aalborg Municipality and local hunting associations. From Monday and for about a month, 20 hunters will be engaged in shooting rook chicks in and around the city. Klaus Godiksen, who is responsible for the shooting on behalf of the municipality, explained to TV2 Nord that the purpose is to reduce the nuisance from the noisy birds. “I understand that people find it annoying when there are seagulls and rooks screaming, so we try to make a difference,” he said.
The effort will include around 2500 nests, more than 1000 of which are located in Mølleparken near Aalborg Zoo, home to Denmark’s largest rook colony. Interestingly, the rook chicks that are shot during this operation will not go to waste. Klaus Godiksen stated that the birds will be prepared and served at a special event on May 22, where participants can taste the results of the hunters’ work. This initiative is an example of how local communities try to address wildlife problems in a way that both addresses human concerns and utilizes resources in a sustainable manner.
