Demonstrators and the University of Copenhagen initiate negotiations. A group of students who have been demonstrating at the University of Copenhagen have now reached an agreement to start real negotiations with the university’s leadership. This comes after a week of protests where students demanded greater transparency and recognition of the Palestinians’ situation. The negotiations, scheduled to take place later this week, were agreed upon after an initial meeting on Monday between representatives from the pro-Palestinian organization Students Against the Occupation (Studerende mod Besættelsen) and the university’s top officials, including the rector and vice-rector.
Ingrid Larsen, the press spokesperson for Students Against the Occupation, expressed optimism after the meeting. “We are pleased that genuine dialogue has been opened, and we feel that there is a real chance that our demands can be met,” she said. The organization’s demands include full financial transparency regarding the university’s investments in companies connected to Israel, as well as an official condemnation of what they describe as an ongoing genocide of Palestinians.
Despite the planned dialogue, Students Against the Occupation do not intend to dismantle their protest camp. “Our tent camp has created necessary pressure, and we will continue to hold our position until concrete results are achieved,” explained Larsen. The specific timing of the upcoming negotiations has not yet been set, but both parties have confirmed that they will meet during the week to further discuss the demands.
