The government steps in to fight to preserve the teacher education program in Skive, which is facing a possible closure. Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen announced in the Parliament that the government will start a dialogue with Via University College, which runs the teacher education program, to ensure its continued existence. This decision follows Via University College’s plans to centralize several of their programs in Holstebro, which includes the closure of the teacher training college in Skive.
The Prime Minister emphasized the importance of having educational institutions spread throughout the country, especially to strengthen local communities. “Closing educational programs can create a negative spiral for the affected local communities, and we wish to avoid that,” said Mette Frederiksen during her speech. She pointed out that even though there will be fewer young people in the coming years, it is essential to maintain a wide range of educational opportunities across the country to prevent depopulation of certain areas.
Via University has initiated a consultation phase that will last for the next month, allowing various stakeholders to have their voices heard. The Prime Minister expressed that the government is open to local input on how to handle the situation, and there is still time to find a solution. The dialogue between the government and Via University will therefore be crucial for the future of the teacher education program in Skive, sending a clear signal that the government aims to preserve educational institutions outside of major cities.
