Danish King praises Norwegian TV series for promoting cultural exchange

In a recent speech, King Frederik highlighted the Norwegian TV series “Skam” for its role in strengthening the bonds between young Danes and Norwegians. The speech, which was delivered during a gala dinner at the royal palace in Norway, shed light on how the series has contributed to a deeper understanding of the Norwegian language among Danish youth.

“Skam”, which first aired in 2015, has become a cultural bridge between the two countries, portraying in detail the lives of a group of Norwegian teenagers. King Frederik noted that the series has made expressions such as “tuller du?” (are you joking?) and “serr” (seriously) familiar among Danish youth, attesting to its significant influence.

This recognition from the royal family underscores the role of “Skam” in promoting Nordic cooperation and cultural exchange. The series has not only entertained but also played an important role in conveying cultural and linguistic nuances between Norway and Denmark.

King Frederik reflected on how Nordic youth series have evolved since the 1970s, when series like “Fleksnes” dominated the TV screens. With “Skam”, there has been a significant change in how young people in the Nordic region see and understand each other across borders.

This speech from King Frederik is a clear signal of the importance of cultural and linguistic exchange in the Nordic region, and how modern media like “Skam” can strengthen connections between young people across national borders.
