In a statement in front of the Danish Parliament, Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen dismisses rumors that she is on her way to a top job in the EU. She is even willing to make a bet with a beer – and more – that she will still be Denmark’s prime minister after the summer holidays. “I don’t know if I have to raise the stakes a bit, a beer is a bit too little. I would like to bet, and I would like to put more in the pot that I will also be Denmark’s prime minister after the summer,” said Mette Frederiksen on Tuesday after Question Time in the Parliament. Speculations about her future in EU circles intensified when several media outlets mentioned her and Portugal’s Prime Minister, Antonio Costa, as the leading candidates for the position of EU president. A Swedish journalist also directly asked about her candidacy for a top job in the EU. The Prime Minister responded that ultimately, it is up to the Danish voters how long she will continue as prime minister, indicating that she plans to run in the next parliamentary election. “Now I have made a bet with TV 2. I don’t know if they do that in Sweden, apparently we do it in Denmark, it’s also new to me,” she continued with a smile. “I am also Denmark’s prime minister after summer. I am happy to be part of the European cooperation, but this is where I am prime minister, that also applies after summer, and as long as the voters wish it,” Mette Frederiksen concluded. After the EU parliamentary elections in June, negotiations for the top positions in the union will begin between member states. The Prime Minister seems determined to continue her work in Denmark, regardless of the rumors swirling around her future on the European stage.
