Danish voters who are unable to show up at polling stations on June 9, when voting for the European Parliament takes place, now have the opportunity to apply to vote from home. The Ministry of Interior and Health has announced that the deadline for applying to vote at home is set for May 28 at 18:00. This offer is especially relevant for citizens who, due to illness, disability, or other reasons, are unable to physically go to a polling station. However, municipalities can choose to extend this deadline if they deem it necessary.
In order to be able to vote from home, one must cast an absentee ballot, which requires approval from one’s own municipality. Once approval has been granted, the municipality will contact the voter to arrange a specific date and time for casting the vote. The absentee ballot process has already been underway since April 29 for those who know they cannot be present on election day, for example, due to vacation or other commitments.
It is important to note that it is possible to change one’s absentee ballot several times, but only the most recent valid vote will be counted. The absentee ballot period runs until June 6, but once an absentee ballot has been cast, one cannot vote again on election day. The ability to cast one’s vote is an important democratic right, and these measures ensure that even those who cannot physically show up will have the opportunity to participate in the European Parliament election.
