During a recent summit in Stockholm, Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre expressed concern over possible double standards in the Western media’s coverage of conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza. The Prime Minister pointed out that while the war in Ukraine often garners attention, the situation in Gaza should not be overlooked. The summit, which brought together leaders from Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Iceland, and Germany, primarily aimed to discuss defense cooperation and support for Ukraine in light of Russian aggression. However, Gahr Støre also emphasized the importance of being aware of other global crises, including the situation in Gaza.
“We are being observed by the global south. Are there double standards in how we comment on Ukraine, and what is happening here?” said Gahr Støre during the press conference. He stressed the necessity of recognizing the value of every human life, regardless of geographical location. The Norwegian government has previously criticized Israel’s response to Hamas’ attacks as disproportionate, while Germany has shown strong support for Israel. These differences in approach were further highlighted during a recent UN vote on the inclusion of Palestine, where Norway voted in favor and Germany abstained.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz also spoke at the meeting, emphasizing Germany’s efforts to balance support for Israel’s self-defense with attention to humanitarian conditions in Gaza. Scholz has called for daily delivery of emergency aid to Gaza to alleviate the humanitarian crisis. The leaders also discussed prospects for future peace in the region and underscored the need for a two-state solution as a way forward. This meeting serves as an important reminder that international crises require a balanced and fair approach, where all parties receive equal attention and support in the pursuit of peace and stability.
