In Paris today, Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen (S) met with France’s President, Emmanuel Macron, to discuss the continued support for Ukraine. The meeting, which took place at the presidential Élysée Palace, marked an important moment in the two countries’ collaboration regarding the current crisis in Ukraine. The Prime Minister’s Office highlighted in a press release that “support for Ukraine comes before anything else” and is a central topic in international discussions. “Ukraine urgently needs ammunition and air defense. We must continue to provide support without hesitation,” stated Mette Frederiksen.
This is the second time under Frederiksen’s leadership that she has had a bilateral meeting with Macron, with the first meeting dating back to 2019. However, the two leaders have regularly met at various EU summits and international conferences, most recently at a support conference for Ukraine, also held at the Élysée Palace. “The war in Ukraine is already impacting the rest of Europe. The international order is being challenged. We cannot take peace and freedom for granted on our continent. It requires action,” said Frederiksen, emphasizing the need to invest in defense and strengthen Europe’s competitiveness to ensure the continent’s global influence and cooperation with close allies like France.
Earlier this week, Mette Frederiksen also participated in a Nordic summit in Stockholm with other Nordic heads of government and Germany’s Chancellor, Olaf Scholz, where similar topics were discussed. Today’s meeting between Frederiksen and Macron highlights the continued focus on Ukraine and the broader geopolitical situation in Europe, where cooperation and strong alliances are considered more vital than ever.
