Copenhagen Pride is facing a serious crisis after several major sponsors have chosen to withdraw their support. This development comes in the wake of a controversial statement from the organization about the Israel/Palestine conflict, which has led to a significant decrease in support. It all started when Copenhagen Pride in February released a press release expressing support for the Palestinian cause and announced an investigation into sponsors’ activities in Israel and Gaza. This move was met with criticism, and despite a subsequent apology from the organization, the exodus of sponsors continues.
Among the companies that have withdrawn their support are names like Volkswagen, Ørsted, Dansk Industri (Danish Industry), and Danske Bank. In total, 16 sponsors have now terminated their collaboration with Copenhagen Pride. Henrik Kragelund, a communications consultant and owner of Shitstormdoktor, believes that Copenhagen Pride has strayed from its core area, namely LGBT rights, which has created problems for the organization. “When Pride suddenly supports one side in an ongoing war, it is clear that many companies cannot handle it,” he explains.
Kragelund suggests that Copenhagen Pride should focus on returning to its fundamental mission of LGBT rights and diversity. He also points out that internal confrontations may be necessary to stabilize the organization. Established in 1996 and known for its annual parade, which attracts tens of thousands of participants, Copenhagen Pride is now facing a challenging period where rebuilding trust and support will be crucial for the organization’s future.
