Special drones take over: Great Belt Bridge under new inspection
As a new initiative, special drones will now be used to analyze and inspect the condition of the Great Belt Bridge. When crossing the Great Belt as a driver in the future, you can look forward to a meeting with hovering drones. In the future, drones will be responsible for inspecting the pylons on the Great Belt Bridge. This means that the special drones will replace the climbers who have been in charge of inspecting the bridge’s condition until now. This information was provided by Sund og Bælt in a press release. The bridge’s concrete needs to be regularly checked, and this task has so far been carried out by human climbers. Using ropes, they have ascended and descended while using paper, pencil, and a camera to document cracks, rust, and chipping.
There are several advantages to having special drones take over this task. Traffic on the bridge can continue as the drones take images, and the precise and timely maintenance will significantly extend the bridge’s lifespan. Today, it is expected that the Great Belt Bridge will be able to stand for 100 years longer than initially predicted at its opening in 1998.
