Thursday will bring rainy weather to most of Denmark, with the southern parts of the country being the most affected areas. The Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI) warns that Thursday will see so much rain in South Jutland, parts of Funen, and southern Zealand, Lolland-Falster, and Møn, that it could be equivalent to what usually falls in the entire month of May. According to duty meteorologist Klaus Larsen from DMI, locally between 30 and 50 millimeters of rain could fall from early Thursday morning until Thursday evening. – That is a significant amount of rain. The climate normal for the month of May is 50 millimeters, so if we reach that today, it equals the entire month’s rainfall, explains Klaus Larsen.
While the most vulnerable areas can expect between 30 and 50 millimeters of rain, most other areas should expect around 20-30 millimeters. Even the northern parts of the country will not escape the rain, albeit to a lesser extent with 5-15 millimeters. The heavy rainfall amounts can have consequences in the form of flooding and aquaplaning. Klaus Larsen warns of possible flooding in low-lying areas and viaducts, as well as a risk of aquaplaning on the roads. In the worst case scenario, the large amounts of rain can cause rivers to overflow their banks. However, the heavy rain is expected to diminish by Friday morning, and a relatively dry day is expected thereafter.
