June 1st will be a significant day for Brøndby Municipality, as Maja Højgaard officially takes over the mayoral position from Kent Magelund. The 38-year-old Maja Højgaard has now been formally elected as Brøndby’s new Social Democratic mayor. At a municipal council meeting on Wednesday evening, Højgaard was officially appointed to the position, the municipality announced in a press release. Already at the end of April, members of the Social Democratic party decided that Maja Højgaard should take over from Kent Magelund, who is retiring on June 1st after eight years as mayor.
The Social Democrats hold a majority with 11 out of 19 seats in the municipal council, securing Højgaard’s position as mayor. Maja Højgaard was elected to the municipal council in 2021 and has been serving as 1st vice mayor and chairman of the social and health committee since 2022. She will thus become Brøndby’s sixth mayor and the first woman to hold the position.
“I am both proud and humble to be elected as mayor of the city I love. It feels very meaningful,” said Maja Højgaard in the press release.
