Rare Stone-Crab Spider Found for First Time on Danish Mainland

A rare spider has been spotted on the Danish mainland for the first time. The discovery was made in the Mols Bjerge National Park and involves the so-called stone crab spider. Until now, this spider has only been known from the island of Møn, located south of Zealand. Biologist and nature communicator Frederik Leck Fischer is behind this remarkable discovery. Fischer made the find at Jernhatten, a hill located in Mols Bjerge. He was actually looking for other rare spiders known to the area. “I was on the hunt for some of the rare spiders that are already quite well-known for Jernhatten. I didn’t find what I was looking for, but I found something else that I could never have hoped for,” says Frederik Leck Fischer in a press release from the national park.

The stone crab spider is one of the rarest among the total of 25 known species of crab spiders in Denmark. These spiders stand out from others by not making webs to catch their prey. Instead, the crab spider uses its very muscular legs to clamp down on its prey. It often hides between rocks and waits for an insect to pass by that it can catch.
