Over the past few months, an outbreak of salmonella has affected several Danes. Now, the number of people diagnosed with the infection has further increased. This was reported by the Statens Serum Institut on its website. In early May, it was announced that 51 people since March had been affected by salmonella, believed to be caused by minced beef. Now, that number has risen to 59. “During March, April, and May 2024, the Statens Serum Institut has registered 59 cases of Salmonella Typhimurium,” it is reported on the SSI’s website. “The Statens Serum Institut, the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration (Fødevarestyrelsen), and the National Food Institute (DTU) have investigated the outbreak of the disease and found that minced beef is the source of infection. The Danish importer recalled the meat on May 8th.” Among the affected individuals, there are 35 men and 24 women. The patients range in age from 0 to 83 years old and are located throughout the country. The highest number of cases have been found in the Capital Region, where there have been 19 cases, while the fewest cases were found in the North Jutland Region with five cases. Earlier this month, it was reported that beef of English origin was the cause of the salmonella outbreak. In connection with this, several batches of beef were recalled by Hilton Foods. Salmonella is a bacterium that causes salmonellosis: a gastrointestinal infection characterized by diarrhea and general discomfort. Infection occurs almost exclusively through food.
