Danish Government Expected to Present Increased Economic Flexibility Soon

Soon the government is expected to present an increased economic scope, and in this context, the Danish Confederation of Trade Unions (FH) issues a call to action. An upgraded scope is expected to be presented very soon by the government, which is a clear sign that the Danish economy is in good shape. Along with the latest growth forecasts, the government should therefore abandon all thoughts of “whipping the Danes” with more labor market reforms. FH’s chairman, Morten Skov Christiansen, states: – The Danish economy is thriving. The government’s reports dispel the economic slowdown and inflation crisis that has been smoldering on the horizon. One of the primary reasons is that wage earners work hard every day to drive society forward and keep it running, he says. The discussion about the need for labor supply reforms, which according to the government are necessary to strengthen the economy, is therefore in focus. – I disagree with that. And I am concerned about it, says Morten Skov Christiansen. He is specifically worried about an upcoming employment reform to be carried out in 2024. In the government’s policy basis, it is stated that three billion must be saved in the employment effort, including by closing down job centers. He also mentions the changes in the education sector, where the government wants to shorten master’s and professional programs. It is the wrong direction to take, according to Morten Skov Christiansen, as the government recently presented a growth forecast for the economy of 2.7 percent in 2024 and 1.8 percent in 2025 – much greater growth than initially anticipated. Although FH is not opposed to an increased labor supply, FH’s chairman points out several “low-hanging fruits” that can be picked. For example, a recent analysis from FH shows that 60,000 Danes would like to work more – but are not allowed to. – If you sum it up, it amounts to 20,000 full-time employees. So just by giving the right to increase working hours to those who wish to do so, we can solve a large part of the challenges we have right now and in the future.
