The social free card allows socially vulnerable individuals to earn money in addition to social benefits. The social free card, introduced as a pilot project in 2019, will now become permanent. This was announced by the Ministry of Social Affairs, Housing, and the Elderly in a press release. In 2024, the social free card will allow socially vulnerable individuals to earn up to 41,280 Danish kroner annually without affecting their social benefits.
Social and Housing Minister Pernille Rosenkrantz-Theil expressed her satisfaction with the decision, stating: “I am very pleased with the permanent establishment of the social free card. This initiative can be a huge help for people who do not fit into society’s norms and may not be able to hold a regular job. Many struggle with homelessness, addiction, and mental health issues.” She added, “The program can give vulnerable citizens a sense of dignity and an opportunity to be part of society on their own terms. This is social policy at its best.”
Funding for making the program permanent will be included in the 2024 budget. According to figures from the Ministry of Social Affairs, Housing, and the Elderly, more than 5,700 individuals have utilized their social free card in connection with one or more job placements.
