Danish Defense Investments Praised by US Diplomat, Leading NATO Position

Despite previous criticism, Denmark is now receiving praise from an American diplomat for its defense investments, placing the country in a leading position within NATO. Denmark has previously been criticized for not meeting NATO’s requirements, but according to an article in Berlingske, the situation now looks different. Doug Jones, responsible for European security and the United States’ relations with Nordic countries, states: “The decisions to invest more in their own defense and meet the two percent target are very important. They place Denmark in a leading position in the alliance.” Jones particularly highlights the steps taken by the Danish Parliament to increase defense spending. This comes despite concerns previously expressed by the American ambassador to Denmark, Alan Leventhal, that there is still a long way to go, as reported in an article in Jyllands-Posten. The Danish Parliament has entered into two agreements on the defense budget, initially allocating 16 billion Danish crowns, and later an additional 95 billion Danish crowns to the Defense.”
